By Aaron Humes: The United States Department of State appears not to have so much as acknowledged, much less responded to, requests from the United Democratic Party to supply what information they have on John Saldivar.
The November 15 announcement that Saldivar, former Government Minister and briefly party leader, was being designated as a “significantly corrupt” official, accused of taking bribes for activity in the Immigration Department and misusing state assets for his personal gain, sent shockwaves throughout the party.
UDP Chairman Michael Peyrefitte wrote to the Secretary of State on the party’s behalf to ask for the information before the meeting of the Special Committee on December 2, but even up to Saturday’s meeting of the National Party Council, there has been no response from Washington.
“Since the day of the designation, we are none the wiser since that time in terms of details coming from the U.S. as to what formed the basis of their designation,” Peyrefitte told Breaking Belize News today.
Peyrefitte said he voted in favour of allowing Saldivar to run as a member of the Special Committee, believing the party did not have enough information to deny him; he was outvoted there 4-3. He abstained at Saturday’s NPC meeting as a result of being a Special Committee member and avoiding potential bias.
Notably, the Party Leader, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, was prepared to back the Special Committee decision and prevent Saldivar from running, but the ex-Belmopan rep leaned on his supporters in the “Caucus for Change” that saves his position for now.
