COVID report: 299 new cases in a week as Belize tries to fight off comeback

Posted: Tuesday, December 20, 2022. 10:47 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ latest COVID report announced that there were 299 new infections in a single week, an increase on last week’s figure of 256.

There are now 232 active cases and 69,675 total infections since March 2020, but no hospitalizations or new deaths were reported.

The Belize District recorded 119 new cases, including 89 in Belize City, nine in Ladyville and five in San Pedro Town; the Cayo District, 73, including 21 in Belmopan and its suburbs and 17 in San Ignacio/Santa Elena; the northern districts 39 including 14 in Orange Walk Town and the southern districts 68 including 10 in Dangriga Town and 15 in Punta Gorda Town.

Director of Public Health and Wellness Dr Melissa Diaz-Musa says the good news is that the symptoms of the latest wave are mild to moderate, including upper respiratory tract infections, a sore throat, headache, exhaustion and tiredness for about two to three days, but the clinics are not being bombarded.

But that does not mean that people with existing conditions are not vulnerable and those who are healthier are advised to protect themselves and their fellows by wearing masks in closed areas, keeping social distance as much as possible, and especially getting vaccinated (the national percentage remains stubbornly just over 51 percent of full vaccination and a lower number receiving booster injections).
