Ex-Canadian soldier John Roy Smith cleared in Wabinaha Bar shooting

Posted: Tuesday, December 20, 2022. 8:38 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: This afternoon in Dangriga, a Magistrate determined there was insufficient evidence against one of the four accused in the Wabinaha Bar shooting incident in Hopkins a few months ago.

John Roy Smith, a Canadian national and former soldier, was released after appearing in court with his former co-accused, Brian Andrews, Kenyon Moore, and Sherwin Moore, who are all residents of Sittee River.

Smith had been accused of acting as the getaway driver for the trio and was originally charged with abetment, which was upgraded to murder, but today he insisted he had nothing to do with what happened.

His attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley told Channel 7 News that he may even have been helping people flee the scene of the mass shooting, where two died and several others including police officers were injured.

The case continues against the remaining accused. The bar’s owner Bernard Nunez has been charged in relation to how a minor was let into the bar before the shooting started.
