By Aaron Humes: Add this one to his already glittering collection of records and accomplishments: World Cup winner Lionel Messi’s post celebrating Argentina’s World Cup win on Instagram is the platform’s most-liked post ever, the BBC reports.
With more than 57 million likes, the post passes the previous holder, a simple picture of an egg.
That post was created for the simple reason of toppling former record-holder Kylie Jenner, which held the record for her announcement of her first child in 2018.
Argentina defeated France on penalties in a thrilling final in Qatar which saw Messi set several more records according to Guinness World Records. He has played the most World Cup matches at 26, surpassing Germany’s Lothar Matthäus; most World Cup Man of the Match awards at 11; most World Cup appearances as captain with 9; most appearances in World Cup tournaments by a male player at five; and the first person to assist a goal at five different World Cups.
And he says he’s not done yet, taking back a report that Sunday’s match would be his last in an Argentina shirt.
Jenner was the first woman to get 300 million followers on the social media site – a milestone also achieved by Messi – but the creators of the egg account, including British advertising executive Chris Godfrey, have since claimed their sole purpose was to get as many likes as possible to topple the model and influencer.
