Indian businessman pleads not guilty to assaulting his colleague; victim wants medical expenses paid

By Breaking Belize News Staff: An Indian businessman is out on bail after being charged with attacking one of his colleagues.

Today 52-year-old Kumar Murlu appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, charged with a single count of common assault upon 66-year-old, Bhagwan Issrani.

He pleaded not guilty to the offense and was granted bail, which he met. In court, Issrani told the Magistrate he was seeking $1,000 in compensation for his medical expenses but was informed that only the criminal aspect of the assault is being addressed by that court.

Issrani said that there were various x-rays and other medical costs incurred as a result of Murlu’s attack and that he had offered not to pursue the matter in court if Murlu had agreed to pay these expenses. Issrani said that he is following through with the trial at Murlu’s refusal to accept responsibility for his injuries.

The case is set to go to trial in January 2023.
