International News: Family of ousted Peruvian leader leaves for Mexico

Posted: Wednesday, December 21, 2022. 9:27 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The family of Peru’s former President, Pedro Castillo has left Peru for Mexico after being offered asylum, BBC reports.

Castillo remains in detention in Peru. Officials in Peru granted Castillo’s family safe passage from the Mexican embassy in Lima to the airport.

The Mexican Ambassador to Lima also departed Peru after the nation ordered him to leave within 72 hours.

Mexican Ambassador Pablo Monroy was expelled from Peru because “of the repeated statements by that country’s highest authorities about the political situation in Peru,” the country’s Foreign Ministry said.

There has been heightened tensions between Mexico and Peru since Peru’s Congress impeached Castillo on 7 December.

Majority of lawmakers in Peru voted in favor of his impeachment immediately after Castillo declared a state of emergency and announced he was dissolving Congress.

Chief of the country’s constitutional court said Castillo’s move constituted an “attempted coup” and Congress quickly deposed him.

Castillo was replaced by his Vice-president, Dina Boluarte, who has called for elections to be brought forward by two years to April 2024.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has sided with Castillo and said that his impeachment was “undemocratic”.
