By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: During a press briefing today, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the World Health Organization is “very concerned” about the increase in COVID-19 cases across China, the AssociatedPress reports.
Ghebreyesus said that the WHO needs more information on the severity of COVID-19 in China especially relating to hospital and intensive case admissions.
WHO would then be able to make a comprehensive risk assessment of the situation on the ground.
“WHO is very concerned over the evolving situation in China with increasing reports of severe disease,” Tedros said.
In addition, experts say that the continued spread of the disease in China could spur the emergence of new variants.
And China has declined to authorize Western-made RNA vaccines, which have proven to be more effective than its locally made shots.
In the last week, an average of 1,801 cases of COVID-19 were reported in China and while cases seem to be decreasing, deaths from COVID-19 are increasing.
However, confirmed cases and deaths are widely believed to be understated.
