By Rubén Morales Iglesias: 30 women vanilla farmers from Corozal participated in a capacity building presentation on Tuesday, said Registrar of Cooperatives Gareth Murillo.
“This included a history of the co-operative movement in Belize.”
The capacity building presentation was conducted in San Roman, Corozal, at the Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College (CEMJC) that, along with the National Women’s Commission (NWC), are collaborators in Belize’s Vanilla Cultivation Pilot Project.
“The program was put together to examine and explain the various organizational models and entrepreneurial support options and opportunities available,” Murillo said.
The women have been trained on the theory and practical components of vanilla farming practices. The IPCU had just held the closing ceremony for the Belize’s Vanilla Cultivation Pilot Project at the CEMJC, when the capacity building presentation was made to encourage the women to form themselves into a cooperative.
“This is as vanilla has been identified as a crop that has potential for both local and foreign investments and is seen as a viable means of diversifying the agricultural base of the Corozal district,” Murillo said.
Hugo Miranda, Education Officer at the Department of Co-operatives, conducted the presentation.
