International News: Mexico arrests brother of most wanted cartel boss

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, Mexican authorities detained the brother of the country’s most wanted cartel boss, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, the Associated Press reports.

The Mexican army reportedly detained Antonio Oseguera with weapons in Guadalajara.

Authorities say that Antonio spearheaded violent crimes, logistics, and bought weapons, and laundered money for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Antonio Oseguera is on a U.S. Treasury Department sanctions list for his ties to the cartel.

The United States has offered a $10 million reward for “El Mencho’s” capture.

The Jalisco cartel is one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent cartels.

The cartel made its reputation with attacks on Mexico’s security forces, including a 2020 assassination attempt on Mexico City’s police chief that wounded him and killed three other people.

The cartel’s focus is trafficking drugs to the United States, specifically methamphetamine and fentanyl.
