International News: UK research firm says COVID-19 deaths in China could be nearing 5,000 per day

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: UK-based research firm, Airfinity is estimating that about 5,000 people in China are dying from COVID-19 daily, Reuters report.

This report offers a dramatic contrast to official data from Beijing.

The firm said it used modeling based on regional Chinese data to produce the figures.

In addition, the estimates were completely different from Beijing’s data which reported 1,800 cases and only 7 COVID-19 deaths in the last week.

On Thursday, China reported no new COVID-19 deaths and 2,966 new local symptomatic cases for Dec. 21.

Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) said that China could be struggling to keep a record of COVID-19 infections since it is experiencing an increase in cases.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the World Health Organization is “very concerned” about the increase in COVID-19 cases across China.
