By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: United Nations deputy secretary-general, Amina Mohammed is urging every country “with capacity” to consider the Haitian Government’s request for an international armed force to restore security, the Associated Press reports.
The Caribbean country faces a severe humanitarian crisis in addition to struggling with a cholera outbreak.
In addition, Mohammed reiterated Secretary General, Antonio Guterres’ call for international support for the Haitian National Police.
“Insecurity has reached unprecedented levels and human rights abuses are widespread. Armed gangs have expanded their violent criminal activities, using killings and gang rapes to terrorize and subjugate communities,” Mohammed said.
On October 7, 2022, Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry sent an urgent appeal requesting the “immediate deployment of a specialized armed force, in sufficient quantity” to stop the crisis caused partly by the “criminal actions of armed gangs.”
However, there has been no support from the international community since then.
Crime and violence has reached “alarmingly high levels” marked by spikes in kidnappings, killings and rapes.
