By Breaking Belize News Staff: In the aftermath of Hurricane Lisa, offices of the Judiciary housed at the courthouse on Treasury Lane in Belize City will have to temporarily relocate while the building is repaired, Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser explained on Wednesday.
Fraser said that the move to the new location on Coney Drive at the former Treasury building will be effective as of January 3. The move is expected to last for some 18 months. The last working day from the Treasury Lane office will be Tuesday, December 27, 2022, and the offices will only be open half-day. As of Wednesday, December 28, 2022, the court will be closed to the public and the move over will begin.
The new Coney Drive Building will host courtrooms 1-7 from the Treasury Lane office as well as courtroom 8, that deals primarily with traffic offenses, which was housed on North Front Street.
Hurricane Lisa hit Belize as a Category 1 storm on November 2, damaging a significant portion of the courthouse roof. Persistent rains following the hurricane further damaged the ceiling. The building was deemed to be a public safety hazard later in November.
