By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States Department of State has responded to a letter sent by UDP Chairman Michael Peyrefitte in which he had requested information in connection with the United States’ designation of former Government Minister John Saldivar.
“Under U.S. law, foreign government officials and their immediate family members about whom the Secretary of State has credible information of direct or indirect involvement in significant corruption are generally ineligible for entry into the United States. We refer you to the Department’s November 15 public statement regarding the designation for former Minister Saldivar,” the U.S. State Department noted.
In addition, the U.S. State Department reiterated that corruption undermines the integrity of Belize’s democratic institutions and fuels perceptions of impunity, diminishing confidence in governance.
“The United States is committed to addressing corruption in all their forms by ensuring our authorities are applied and have a maximum effect, coordinating with allies and partners wherever possible,” the letter ended.
