Rainy, cool Christmas and Boxing Day as cold front to linger over Belize till Tuesday

By Aaron Humes: Belize tonight remains in the grips of a cold front held in place by a stationary front to the east and south, according to the National Meteorological Service, resulting in wet and windy conditions.

There was light rain over inland and central areas, light to moderate rain, and a few embedded showers offshore, especially in the northern half of coastal waters. Winds over Belize City and Ambergris Caye gusted up to 22 to 30 knots this afternoon and evening. About half an inch of rain was collected countrywide, mostly over northwestern Cayo and the western Orange Walk District.

The stationary front stretches from the Bahamas to the Gulf of Honduras supported by a polar trough in the southeastern United States and the northern Gulf of Mexico which will continue to support moist, cloudy and gusty conditions.

The 24-hour forecast is for mostly cloudy to overcast skies with cool and windy conditions continuing. Light rain will continue to affect some inland and central areas. In contrast, periods of light to moderate rain with a few embedded showers will linger over some coastal but mostly offshore areas tonight and tomorrow, Boxing Day. The further outlook is for variably cloudy skies with cool and windy conditions. Light rain and a few showers will linger mainly offshore but also over some coastal areas on Monday night and Tuesday.

Winds are northerly to northwesterly at 15 to 25 knots and gusty; sea state is rough and a small craft warning is in effect for strong winds and rough seas. All sea vessels should seek and remain in safe harbor.
