Pele’s cancer worsens; Family grateful for “one more night”

Posted: Monday, December 26, 2022. 11:48 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: World Cup legend Pele’s condition continues to worsen as he receives treatment for colon cancer at Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, The Sun reports.

Pele’s family gathered at his bedside for Christmas, posting several updates on their social media pages on the 82-year-old’s condition. Pele has been battling colon cancer since September 2021, and on November 30, 2022, he was admitted to the hospital.

In an Instagram post, his daughter Kelly said “We continue to be here, in fight and in faith. Another night together.”

Doctors said this week his cancer had advanced and that he requires care related to renal and cardiac dysfunction.

Despite his health struggles, Pele did not miss the 2022 World Cup and even took to his own social media pages to congratulate his friend and colleague Lionel Messi on his historic win for Argentina.

The three-time world cup winner posted on his Instagram: “Today, football continues to tell its story, as always, in an enthralling way.”

“Messi winning his first World Cup, as his trajectory deserved.”

“What a gift it was to watch this spectacle to the future of our sport.”
