By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Salvadoran Government went into the Christmas holidays conducting anti-drug military operations commencing on Christmas Eve, Reuters report.
The effort was done in Nayib Bukele’s administration’s crackdown on gangs, a measure that began in March with an extended state of emergency.
One thousand troops were deployed and over 100 police officers participated in the operations, Bukele said.
Salvadoran authorities say that they found weapons, over $10,000 in cash, and drugs.
“All terrorists, drug traffickers, and gang members will be removed from this community. Honest citizens have nothing to fear and can continue to lead their lives normally,” Bukele said.
Bukele’s administration has significantly reduced the number of homicides but several human rights groups have criticized the measures used.
