Belizean-American Theresa Maughan named New Jersey 2022 State Teacher of the Year

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean-American teacher Theresa Maughan was named New Jersey 2021-2022 State Teacher of the Year.

Maughan received the Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence and was invited to the White House by US President Joe Biden for an event honouring the 2022 Teachers of the Year earlier this year.

On December 27, 2022, Maughan was featured by CBS News New York.

According to CBS News, Maughan migrated to the United States as a child. When she and her family were threatened with deportation, one of her primary school teachers intervened and helped them with the naturalization process.

Maughan has taught for more than 40 years, 35 at East Orange in New Jersey.

“I am blessed that teaching is my passion work,” Maughan told CBS News.

“I hope to inspire my children not to defer their dream; that you keep pursuing it and you do it for the love of what you’re doing.”

Maughan is currently teaching tenth-grade history at the East Orange Stem Academy.

“Miss Maughan has been the epitome of what education and teaching looks like on a daily consistent basis,” said Vincent Stallings, Principal at East Orange Stem Academy.
