British soldier accused of kidnapping girlfriend cries in court when remanded to prison

Posted: Wednesday, December 28, 2022. 10:05 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A British soldier attached to the British Army Training and Support Unit Belize (BATSUB) has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison for allegedly kidnapping his girlfriend.

The soldier, 30-year-old Perry Stanford, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, represented by attorney Orson Elrington.

Stanford was charged with one count of kidnapping, one count of theft, one count of harm, and one count of damage to property.

No plea was taken due to the severity of the kidnap[ping charge. Elrington has applied to the court that Stanford be detained at the BATSUB facility in Ladyville as opposed to being remanded to prison. BATSUB’s commander had also appeared in court saying that Stanford could be housed at the facility; however, he would need an order from the Supreme Court to make that possible.

With that, Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser instead remanded Stanford to the Belize Central Prison, and he began crying in court.

Elrington said that he would be making his application to the Supreme Court as early as today, meanwhile, Stanford is due back in court on February 7, 2023.

He stands accused of kidnapping his girlfriend on December 24, stealing her phone and a number of personal items, damaging the phone, and harming her in the process of the kidnapping.
