By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Coastal Zone Park Ranger has been fined in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for discharging his licensed firearm in public.

The ranger, 45-year-old Ian Banks, appeared unrepresented in court on Tuesday, charged with firing his .9mm pistol into the air on Oleander Street, Belize City, which is only some yards away from the Mahogany Street Police Station.

In court, Banks pleaded guilty, explaining that he was going through a difficult time emotionally, having to cope with the murder of his brother Darien Banks which occurred earlier this year.

For his guilty plea, Banks was fined $1,000 plus a $5.00 cost or court, which he has to pay by February 23, 2023 or face a year imprisonment.

When inquiring if he would get his gun license back, the Magistrate explained to Banks that the decision to take away or let him keep his license ultimately rests with the Commissioner of Police.
