By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hospitals and medical professionals in China are ‘overwhelmed’ by the new surge in COVID-19 cases, Reuters report.
A hospital in Shanghai said that about half of the city’s 25 million people could get infected by the end of this week.
Meanwhile, in Beijing, some patients have been turned away due to a lack of beds.
Doctor Howard Bernstein says that the United Family Hospital is overwhelmed and the emergency room is filled with patients.
The resurgence in COVID-19 cases comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government suddenly abandoned strict measures.
Frontline workers have reportedly been told to work even when sick and retired staff have been brought back.
Data from a UK-based health data firm estimates that China is facing over a million COVID-19 infections and about 5,000 deaths daily.
