By Benjamin Flowers: The man charged with an attempted bombing at Brasilia International Airport, Brazil, told authorities that he intended to disrupt the presidential inauguration which is scheduled to be held this weekend, CNN reports.
The suspect, 54-year-old gas station manager George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, was arrested on December 24, by police on suspicion of planting and possessing explosive devices ahead of the inauguration of incoming president, Lula da Silva.
In a written statement to authorities, Sousa said that he was inspired by outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro, and spent over $30,000 to purchase five explosive devices, a rifle, two shotguns, revolvers, and more than 1,000 rounds of live ammunition.
He also said that he intended to “create chaos” to cause a “siege state in the country” which would prevent the inauguration. He also told authorities he wanted to prevent the establishment of communism in Brazil.”
