By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, President Tsai Ing-Wen announced that Taiwan will extend mandatory military service from 4 months to 1 year, BBC reports.
There are heightened tensions between Taiwan and China since China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.
The new plans will be done to bolster Taiwan’s defence in the event of an attack from Beijing.
“Peace will not drop from the sky… Taiwan is on the frontline of authoritarian expansion,” the President said.
In addition, there will be more intense training, borrowing some elements from the US and other advanced militaries.
The President says that the current defence system was inadequate to cope with aggression from China.
“No-one wants war, Taiwan and Taiwanese people are the same, and the international community is the same,” President Tsai stated.
“China’s military aggression has become increasingly obvious after its war game in August,” she added.
In August, China’s military conducted military exercises in response to U.S. House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
