Accused kidnapper, British national Perry Stanford out on bail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: British national 30-year-old Perry Stanford, who was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Tuesday on kidnapping and other charges, is out on bail.

Stanford’s attorney Orson Elrington managed to successfully argue for his client to receive bail from the Supreme Court on Wednesday, before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft.

At the emergency bail application hearing, Justice Sancroft summoned the arresting officer and investigating officer to inquire as to why Stanford, a soldier attached to the British Army Training and Support Unit Belize (BATSUB) was sent to the Belize Central Prison and not a facility designated to house law enforcement personnel.

Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP, Martha Rhys, who is attached to the Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) of the Belize Police Department, explained to Justice Sandcroft that while she agrees that law enforcement personnel should be housed in a different facility, the Belize Central Prison is currently the assigned facility under the system in place.

Meanwhile, Stanford was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 plus one surety of the same or two sureties of $5,000 each. His bail came with several conditions including his remand into the custody of BATSUB personnel at the Price Barracks in Ladyville. Stanford cannot leave the barracks unless it is for him to sign in to a designated police station, which he must do every day of the week, or to meet his court dates. Stanford will also undergo six months of anger management counseling while at the Price Barracks.

Stanford stands accused of kidnapping his fiancee on Saturday, December 24. He was also charged with one count of harm, one count of theft, and one count of damage to property. As part of his application to the court, Elrington asked that a police officer take his client’s statement regarding the events of that day. The request was granted.
