By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) says that the fuel subsidy program launched earlier this year was a “huge success,” but there are currently no plans in the works to renew the program.
The program, which offset the exorbitant costs of fuel for tour operators for the months July-November, directly benefited around 185 tour operators. Director of Tourism Evan Tillett, told Breaking Belize News today that the program was a collaborative effort between the BTB and the Government of Belize which was based upon the needs of the industry at the time.
“I think that the help we provided at a time when the fuel prices were really high, really assisted the industry at a time when they needed it the most,” Tillett said.
He went on to say that the BTB received positive feedback from everyone involved in the program and that the cost of fuel trending down in recent weeks will put tour operators in a better position.
“The important thing now is that we focus on growth, and how we can continue to grow the industry beyond 2019 numbers, which was the benchmark year for tourism in Belize,” Tillett added. “We will continue to look at ways how we can help the industry, but right now there are no plans to revisit the fuel subsidy.”
