By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The UK-based health data firm, Airfinity says that COVID-19 deaths in China are estimated at about 9,000 a day, Reuters report.
Last month, COVID-19 cases began to soar after Beijing dismantled its zero-COVID policies.
According to Airfinity, cumulative deaths in China since December 1 have likely reached 100,000 with infections totaling 18.6 million.
The estimate is in contrast to data being reported by Chinese health authorities.
The country’s health authorities are reporting about 5,000 cases a day but analysts believe that the numbers are undercounted. The surge in cases has drained resources and there is uncertainty about the scale of the outbreak amidst doubts over official data.
Several countries including the United States have imposed COVID-19 testing on travelers from China.
