International News: United States impose COVID-19 testing for travelers from China

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States has imposed COVID-19 testing on travelers from China after reports of a surge in cases, BBC reports.

Meanwhile, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, and India already announced mandatory tests for travelers from China.

China will let people travel more freely commencing January 8, 2023.

The country’s health authorities are reporting about 5,000 cases a day but analysts believe that the numbers are undercounted. The surge in cases has drained resources and there is uncertainty about the scale of the outbreak amidst doubts over official data.

The U.S. says that a lack of “adequate and transparent” COVID-19 data in China has contributed to the decision to require COVID-19 tests from 5 January for travelers entering the country from China, Hong Kong and Macau.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the decision is “to help slow the spread of the virus as we work to identify… any potential new variants that may emerge”.
