By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Let us welcome 2023 but not forget what 2022 has taught us and blessed us with!” said the New Year’s Day message expressed by the Chief Executive Officer in Ministry of Economic Development, Dr. Osmond Martinez, and the Second Road Safety Project Executing Unit on wishing all Belizeans a Happy, Prosperous and Safe, New Year.

“Reflecting on 2022, it has been a challenging year for many of us; some of us experienced sorrow, having lost loved ones and while we will always remember them dearly, let us now focus on the year ahead,” said CEO Martinez in the New Year’s message.

“In doing so, many of us will make resolutions and commitments for the coming year. So, for 2023, let us commit to playing our part in making Belize a safer place!  Particularly, a safer place to drive!”

The message said that our road infrastructure is continuously transforming to international standards as Belize moves towards making driving safer.

“Steps are well underway to updating existing and implementing new traffic regulations as we continue to move towards a safer driving population in Belize,” said the message asking drivers to play their part in abiding by the rules of the road.

“Let’s make a conscious effort not to drive while intoxicated; not to be distracted while driving; not to speed; not to show rage toward other drivers. The happiness of your families may depend on you, the driver,” said the New Year’s message.

‘In Belize, we can make 2023 the year with the most significant reduction in road traffic incidents (RTIs). For us as a nation, this means that we will continue to build on the reduction of RTIs to achieve our ‘Decade of Action’ for our Road Safety goal of 50 percent reduction in traffic fatalities by 2030. Let’s learn from the scourge of road traffic incidents that we’ve experienced in 2022.”
