Prime Minister’s New Year Address sets out great expectations for 2023: “Reasons for hope are abundant”

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has addressed the nation for the final time in 2022, painting an optimistic picture of the year to come to buttress his argument that “across our blessed land, reasons for hope are abundant.”

At this annual time of transition, “our peoples and communities are infused with optimism. The worst of the COVID pandemic is behind us; more Belizeans than ever are working; the national economy is expanding at a record pace; and the nation is deepening its democracy and reexamining its Constitution,” the Prime Minister said.

The P.M. spoke of a “renewed national pride” that he has seen personally on the ground in the last few weeks, a “positive energy” that will, in his view, “suffuse 2023 with spectacular rewards.”

At the turn of 2021, Belize did not know it would face challenges ranging from a resurgence of the COVID pandemic to economic uncertainty caused in part by a war in Ukraine that would lead to supply chain disruptions and inflation of prices of basic goods and fuel not seen for 40 years. But still, the Prime Minister said, “our country’s performance is even more exceptional” considering what has been happening around us, because of the steps the administration took to rescue the dollar, turn around the finances and restore public confidence internationally and internally. Those steps, he said, have become strides as the economy rebounded, and in 2023, despite gloomy economic forecasts, Belize will take “leaps forward” to elevate the quality of life, include more in our national welfare and development, and open Belize to all who wish to succeed.

As he wished Belizeans a Happy New Year, Briceño reminded, “We are a nation of limitless possibilities, a land where dreams spring forth from a soil rich and resilient, a country whose national fabric is woven from the timeless values of dignity, hard work, fairness, compassion, and resilience,” and thanked all Belizeans for their contributions to the land we call our own.
