International News: China ends COVID-19 quarantine for travelers commencing January

Posted: Friday, December 30, 2022. 2:23 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Commencing January 8, 2023, travelers to China will no longer need to quarantine, BBC reports.

The country had been closed off for 3 years and implemented strict zero-covid policies.

But, most recently, Chinese officials decided it was time to live with COVID-19 and the country will reopen to those with work and study visas, or seeking to visit family.

As they lifted restrictions, the nation experienced a surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths.

UK-based health data firm, Airfinity says that COVID-19 deaths in China are estimated at about 9,000 a day.

The country’s health authorities are reporting about 5,000 cases a day but analysts believe that the numbers are undercounted. The surge in cases has drained resources and there is uncertainty about the scale of the outbreak amidst doubts over official data.
