By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, December 28, 2022, the armed forces of Colombia and Ecuador signed an agreement to implement a plan to contain drug trafficking and organized crime at their borders, Reuters report.
The countries share a border that stretches about 586 kilometers where gangs and illegal armed groups conduct smuggling and drug trafficking.
The new plan will include joint operations, and tactical and strategic operations.
“Efforts currently under our responsibility to eliminate drug trafficking, environmental crimes, smuggling, and other areas will not decline,” General Helder Giraldo of Colombia’s military, said.
Last month, Colombian President, Gustavo Petro called on countries with which the country shares a border to work together on a military offensive against illegal armed groups.
Along Colombia’s border regions, illegal groups have coca plantations, coca is the main ingredient in cocaine.
