International News: Maduro-like Superman toy stirs controversy in Venezuela

Posted: Friday, December 30, 2022. 10:29 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Venezuelan Government distributes thousands of toys every year on Christmas. Those toys include bicycles, Barbie dolls and plastic trucks.

But this year, a Maduro-like plastic superman toy is stirring controversy, the Associated Press reports.

The action figure has red tights, a blue cape and a big mustache, modeled after President Nicolas Maduro.

The action figure’s name is “Super Bigote” due to the mustache.

According to the report, “Super Bigote” had an animated series where it fights a Donald Trump-like villain that tries to sow chaos from his base in a faraway mansion that resembles the White House.

Meanwhile, academics and opposition leaders have expressed outrage over the mass distribution of the action figure claiming it is a “tasteless effort” to indoctrinate children as Venezuela struggles to recover from years of economic recession, food shortages and hyperinflation.

But Government supporters were happy about the toy distribution.
