International News: Southwest Airlines resume normal operations

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Southwest Airlines resumed normal operations after its ‘holiday meltdown’ situation that left thousands of travelers stranded in airports.

According to the Associated Press, with the number of flight cancelations, it could be more than a million passengers who missed family connections or flights home during the Christmas holidays.

Southwest Airlines as well as other U.S. airlines were affected by the powerful winter storm that hit the U.S. However, by Monday, other airlines had resumed operations.

Now, federal regulators are reviewing what occurred with Southwest Airlines.

On Thursday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said that the week of disruptions was “unacceptable.”

“While weather can disrupt flight schedules, the thousands of cancellations by Southwest in recent days have not been because of the weather,” Buttigieg wrote.

“Other airlines that experienced weather-related cancellations and delays due to the winter storm recovered relatively quickly, unlike Southwest,” he added.

Southwest Airlines began accepting reservations today again after getting crews and planes into place.
