Pelé’s 100-year-old mom still alive

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, died on Thursday at age 82, is being grieved by his family including his mother Maria Celeste Arantes, who is 100 years old.

Recently, on November 20, Pelé honoured her with a post on Instagram on her 100^th birthday.

“Today, we celebrate 100 years of Dona Celeste’s life,” Pelé said.

“From a young age, she taught me the value of love and peace. I have well over a hundred reasons to be thankful for being her son. I share these photos with you, with great emotion to celebrate this day. Thank you for every day by your side, Mom,” Pelé wrote in Portuguese.

Celeste Arantes was recently named ‘Brazilian Mother of the Year’ by O’Globo, Brazil’s leading newspaper based in Rio de Janeiro. Maria Celeste was married to Joao Ramos do Nascimento, known as Dondinho.

Like her son, Celeste was born in Três Corações in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. When Pelé was still a child, the family moved to Bauru. It is said that Dona Celeste encouraged Pelé to follow his dreams.
