Benque’s traditional End-of-the-Year Veterans vs Youth football match is on today December 31 at 4:00 pm

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Benque Viejo del Carmen’s traditional End-of-the-Year Veterans vs Youth football match will be played today, December 31, at 4:00 pm at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium.

The match which features the old generation players against the new generation is this year being played in memory of doctors Kevin and Kenneth Guerra and Rafael ‘Chapay’ Contreras. The Guerra twins, who passed away in 2020 victims of COVID-19, were passionate football players. They played for Benque teams including Verdes and for the Belize Junior National Team. Chapay was the founder of the Verdes Football Club.

The two Guerra brothers and Chapay, who were very much loved in Benque Viejo del Carmen, also played in the End-of-the-Year game.

The first of these games was played 26 years ago and was only interrupted in 2020 because of COVID-19. The Vets have won more games, though over the last few years the match has ended in a draw.

The match features only players who either were born in Benque or live in Benque.

Players such as Erwin Contreras, Errol Coleman, Cesar Mendez, Rene Montero have featured regularly.

This year, expect to see Cesar Mendez, Hernan Contreras, Shamir Pacheco, and Trinidad ‘Da’ Mendez, to name only a few of the older guys.

The Youth will feature Verdes and Benque United players such as Owen Sosa, Desmond Wade, Jaylon Lennan, and San Pedro’s Moises Martinez to name a few as well.

The two sides already had a go at each other on December 14 and finished in a 2-2 draw.
