By Aaron Humes: On January 1, 1959, a revolutionary force led by brothers Fidel and Raul Castro overturned the military dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, introducing in its place a socialist state that endures, despite many challenges, to this day.
That state’s current leader, President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, took to Twitter to proclaim (translated), “Long live the Cuban Revolution on its 64th anniversary! Thanks to Fidel, Raúl, and the historic generation for all the strength that nourishes us in this beautiful Revolution that you forged and that we have sworn to defend. To all our people, Happy 2023. #GatherAndOvercome.”
The incumbent president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, joined in, tweeting (translated): “The memorable victory of the revolutionary people of Cuba still shakes consciences in the world, bothering the pretensions of Yankee imperialism, to sustain its hegemony over the rebel wave that advances demanding justice. Long live Cuba always victorious!”
Cuba was one of Belize’s first allies in our fight for independence and has been a source of support in education and health, offering medical scholarships and, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors to treat the sick. Belize has in turn continuously called for the United States to remove its economic embargo on the island and allow it more leverage in the world system.
