International News: New Year’s Day prison attack in Mexico leaves 14 dead

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican authorities say that an armed assault on a prison in Juarez on Sunday claimed 14 lives, CNN reports.

Ten security guards, 4 prisoners were killed and 13 others were injured in the assault.

According to reports, gunmen in armored vehicles arrived at the prison and began shooting at the security guards.

During the exchange of gunfire, 24 inmates escaped.

Ciudad Juarez is one of Mexico’s most violent cities and the epicenter of drug cartel violence.

The Juarez and Sinaloa cartels engage in violent turf wars over smuggling routes and drug dealing territory.
