International News: Thousands celebrate New Year in Wuhan amidst COVID-19 wave

Posted: Monday, January 2, 2023. 8:32 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Saturday night, thousands gathered in central Wuhan to bring in the new year, Reuters reported.

In 2019, COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China and now, three years later, there is growing concern about the COVID-19 wave presently affecting China.

The Chinese Government recently abandoned its strict zero-covid policies and since then, cases of COVID-19 have been rapidly increasing.

China is fully re-opening its borders on January 8, 2023 and several countries including the United States have now imposed COVID-19 testing measures.

UK-based health data firm Airfinity estimates that COVID-19 deaths in China have reached 9,000 daily.

Law enforcement authorities in China used loudspeakers to urge people not to gather in large groups.
