International News: Venezuela and Colombia fully reopen shared border

Posted: Monday, January 2, 2023. 10:10 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On January 1, 2023, Venezuela and Colombia fully reopened their shared border, Reuters report.

The passage of cargo and passenger transport can now travel via the cross-border Tienditas bridge.

In September of 2022, the border crossing in Tachira was also reopened after the countries strengthened political ties under Colombia’s new president, Gustavo Petro.

Officials in both countries have said that the reopening would be beneficial and progressive.

“We completely reopen the border between our countries in order to guarantee the movement of cargo and passengers, and to promote trade and tourism in Colombia and Venezuela, not only by land but also by air and river”, said Colombia’s Minister of Transport Guillermo Reyes Gonzalez.

Official statistics from Colombia indicate that the commercial exchange between the two countries is worth around $580 million.
