By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) is advising drivers of big heavy trucks to use John Smith Road instead of passing through Haulover Bridge.

The MIDH had to close the Haulover Bridge for a couple of hours on Saturday to conduct what it called ‘urgent repairs’ but issued the advisory considering the number of times it’s had to close the bridge for repairs, (that’s why a new bridge is being built).

“The Haulover Bridge is open to traffic, thanks to speedy repairs conducted by the MIDH through its independent contractor. Still, we advise motorists to move with sense – if you’re driving a big truck hauling a big weight, you may want to divert through the John Smith Road,’ said the MIDH after the repairs were done on Saturday.

At the time the MIDH said that they were considering diverting all heavy traffic to the John Smith Road which runs from Ladyville to Western Paradise at Mile 8 on the George Price Highway.

“Motorists are advised that work is currently being done on the Haulover Bridge after a section became compromised this morning. This bridge has more than served its time, and serious discussions are underway to consider diverting all heavy vehicles through the John Smith Road in the near future,” said the MIDH on Saturday.
