Another overnight murder reported in Belize City to cap off wild holiday weekend

By Aaron Humes: Hilberto Martinez joins the lengthy list of victims of violence over the New Year’s holiday weekend after being shot dead this morning at his residence on Hilda Street.

According to police, at 12:43 a.m., they found Hilberto Martinez, a tattoo artist, dead at his residence with multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

Initial investigation revealed that about 20 minutes earlier, Martinez was at home when a man knocked on his front door. As he opened the door, the shooter began to fire several shots towards Hilberto Martinez. He then escaped, leaving Martinez dead on the spot.

Investigation has been opened into this latest murder and a press conference with the Commissioner of Police and Minister of Home Affairs has been scheduled for this morning in Belize City at 10 a.m. The press conference is being held to respond to the six deaths reported in Belize City, San Pedro Town and Belmopan since New Year’s eve.
