Elmer Nah arraigned in Belmopan Magistrate’s Court for double murder

Posted: Tuesday, January 3, 2023. 2:54 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Police Corporal Elmer Nah has been arraigned in the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court for the double murder of brothers Jon and David Ramnarace.

Nah, who was formally charged by police last night, appeared in court this afternoon screaming that he is being wrongfully accused of the crime.

Nah is facing two counts of murder with respect to the brothers as well as one count of attemtped murder, one count of use of deadly means of harm, and one count of dangerous harm upon Vivian Belisle Ramnarace.

Today Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa said that a special prosecutor will be hired to prosecute the case, as Nah is the nephew of Assistant Commissioner of Police Marco Vidal, the estranged husband of Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl Lynn Vidal.

Musa said that the move to appoint a special prosecutor comes with the blessing of Prime Minister John Briceno and that the selection will be done with assistance from the victim’s families and the Attorney General’s Ministry.

“In this case, while the DPP may want to recuse herself on her own because of her relationship through marriage, we are taking no chances,” Musa said.

“We are not limiting it to just a Belize prosecutor but certainly one from the Caribbean that has similar legislation and laws as ours. That is the direction we are looking; either from the Caribbean that the family can agree to or one from outside[of the Caribbean],” Musa added.
