International News: 500 migrants land via boat in Florida Keys over New Year’s weekend

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over the New Year’s weekend, some 500 migrants landed via boat along the Florida Keys, Market Watch reports.

Economic crisis, food shortages and inflation are affecting Cuba and other countries as their residents seek better opportunities.

According to the report, 300 migrants arrived at the Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West.

The Park had to close so that officials could evaluate the group before moving them to Key West.

In addition, 160 migrants arrived by boats in other parts of the Florida Keys.

Local officials say that resources are now stretched thin.

“Refugee arrivals require a lot of resources from the Sheriff’s Office as we help our federal law enforcement partners ensure the migrants are in good health and safe,” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, whose office’s jurisdiction encompasses the Florida Keys.

“This shows a lack of a working plan by the federal government to deal with a mass migration issue that was foreseeable.”

U.S. officials say that they are experiencing large groups of migrants by boat in almost a decade, most of the migrants are from Cuba and Haiti.
