Posted: Tuesday, January 3, 2023. 9:53 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican authorities continue on a manhunt for 30 inmates who staged a prison break in Ciudad Juarez on Sunday, BBC reports.

Seven people were killed in a shootout following the prison break.

Gunmen opened fire on investigators who were searching for the escapees killing 2 of them.

Five gunmen also died in the shoot-out, officials said.

Law enforcement authorities believe that the Los Mexicles gang which is linked to the Sinaloa cartel is responsible for the violence.

The prison break on Sunday was one of the deadliest in recent times in Mexico leaving 10 guards and 7 inmates dead.

According to reports, the heavily armed men arrived on Sunday morning in armored vehicles and opened fire at guards at the entrance of the prison.

The inmates set mattresses on fire inside their cells to create confusion.

Among the escapees is the leader of Los Mexicles, Ernesto Piñón de la Cruz, also known as El Neto.

De la Cruz had been in prison for 14 years for kidnapping and murder.
