By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Media in China reportedly downplayed the severity of the new wave of COVID-19 affecting the country, Reuters report.

A briefing with the World Health Organization (WHO) is scheduled for today to include a “detailed discussion” on the evolution of the virus in China.

Last month, China abandoned its strict zero-covid policies and since then, the country has seen a rapid surge in infections.

Several countries including the United States have now imposed COVID-19 testing requirements for travelers from China.

But, China’s Foreign Ministry says that the entry curbs imposed is “simply unreasonable” and “lacked scientific basis”.

The WHO has urged health officials in China to share specific and real-time information about the outbreak.

Chinese scientists will present detailed data on hospitalizations, infections and deaths at the meeting today.
