Police to decentralize presence in major towns

Posted: Tuesday, January 3, 2023. 11:05 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Police Department has announced plans to add Police booths in several major towns following incidents over the New Year’s weekend.

The Police stations in Belmopan and San Pedro are centrally located but rather far from the sites of the murders that took place in those municipalities.

With the assistance of the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) and San Pedro Town Council in the first instance, Police have established a permanent presence at the Central Park, and will staff booths elsewhere in town.

There are also plans to increase direct presence in Belmopan and San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town, with the Capital moving to a precinct system similar to that of Belize City.

The Commissioner noted that a ten-minute response time as in the San Pedro incident is not acceptable in order to save lives and maintain law and order.
