Youth beat Veterans 4-1 in Benque’s traditional End-of-the-Year football match

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Youth beat Veterans 4-1 in Benque’s traditional End-of-the-Year Veterans vs Youth football match held at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium on December 31.

Verdes’ Desmond Wade Jr. led the Youth team with two goals. Benque United’s Nahjib Guerra and Elias Iglesias scored one goal each.

Jamil Cano converted the consolation goal for the Veterans.

The match which features the old generation players against the new generation was played in memory of doctors Kevin and Kenneth Guerra and Rafael ‘Chapay’ Contreras. The Guerra twins, who passed away in 2020 victims of COVID-19, were passionate football players. They played for Benque teams including Verdes and for the Belize Junior National Team. Chapay was the founder of the Verdes Football Club.

The first of these games was played 26 years ago and was only interrupted in 2020 because of COVID-19. The Vets have won more games, but last Saturday it was the Youths turn to shine.

The Youth were coached by Heraldo Rancharan while the Veterans had Hernan “Nan’ Contreras as their coach.

The two sides already had a go at each other on December 14 and finished in a 2-2 draw.
