Family of cancer-stricken girl thanks public for support with blood donations

Posted: Wednesday, January 4, 2023. 4:08 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: According to Rakeem Dawson, the uncle of 11-year-old Shanika Pollard, she has received the amount of blood donations needed to stabilize her as her family prepares her to be flown out for medical treatment sometime in the next week.

Dawson had put out a public appeal to donate blood – O-positive, preferably, but any type would do.

Dawson explained to Breaking Belize News (BBN) that Shanika fell in an open manhole three months ago and wound up paralyzed. Worse, the injuries left blood unable to circulate in her legs, leading to blood clots and eventually a form of cancer.

If you would like to support the family you may contact Rakeem Dawson at 625-7969, Shanika’s mother at 628-0804 or Sonia at 613-1352.
