International News: European Union offers free COVID-19 vaccines to China

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, an official from the European Union (EU) said that the EU would offer free vaccines to China as the country faces a surge in COVID-19 infections.

According to Reuters, the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases followed Beijing’s relaxation of its “zero-covid” policies.

China is yet to respond to the offer.

EU health commissioner, Stella Kyriakides has reached out to Chinese officials to offer public health expertise as well as variant-adapted EU vaccine donations.

But, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning says that the country’s vaccination rate and treatment capacity continued to rise and its supplies were “adequate”.

EU health experts are scheduled to meet today to weigh a coordinated approach by the bloc to travellers from China.
