International News: U.S. Embassy in Cuba resumes immigrant visa processing after 5 years

Posted: Wednesday, January 4, 2023. 3:19 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba resumed full immigrant visa processing and consular services for the first time since 2017, Reuters report.

The move was done in an effort to stem the record-breaking flow of illegal migrants from Cuba to the United States.

The embassy closed those services in 2017 when embassy personnel got sick.

Since then, Cubans would travel to Guyana for visa processing.

In 2022, the U.S. Embassy in Havana began limited visa processing and announced the full reopening this year.

Last year, the U.S. issued 20,000 immigrant visas to Cubans and said it aims to do the same in 2023.

However, a record-breaking 250,000 Cubans left the island in 2022 for the United States via dangerous, irregular routes.
