By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that the COVID-19 outbreak in China is being led by Omicron subvariants BA.5.2 and BF.7, Reuters report.

The sub-variants account for 97.5% of all local infections in China.

The WHO noted that the data was based on analysis from more than 2,000 genomes by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

No new variant or mutation of known significance was noted in the publicly available sequence data, officials noted.

The information was obtained through a briefing with China’s top scientists on Tuesday.

WHO has requested that scientists present detailed data on viral sequencing, to get better clarity on hospitalizations, deaths and vaccinations.
